In our downtown and city driving module, you’ll learn how to navigate through slippery streets and intersections safely. You’ll discover the best practices for adjusting your speed and following distance based on road conditions, and how to anticipate potential hazards such as pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. Our instructors will teach you how to handle tight spaces and narrow roads, and how to use your mirrors and blind spots effectively.

Following distance

Maintaining a safe following distance is crucial in winter conditions, where slippery roads can cause vehicles to lose traction suddenly. In this module, you’ll learn how to judge a safe following distance based on road conditions, and how to use visual cues such as tail lights and road markings to gauge your distance from other vehicles. We’ll also cover the proper use of high beams and low beams in winter driving.

Stopping techniques

Learning proper stopping techniques is vital for safe winter driving. In this module, you’ll practice using your vehicle’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) effectively, and learn how to stop smoothly and safely on icy, wet, and snow-covered roads. You’ll also discover how to recover if you lose control while braking, and how to use your emergency flashers strategically.

Exiting and entering the freeway

Merging onto or exiting the freeway can be particularly hazardous in winter conditions, where reduced visibility and slippery roads can lead to accidents. In this module, you’ll learn safe merging techniques when joining or leaving the freeway, and how to identify potential hazards such as black ice and reduced visibility. Our instructors will show you how to check your blind spots effectively and signal your intentions clearly.

Changing lanes

Changing lanes safely is another critical skill for winter driving. In this module, you’ll learn when and how to change lanes carefully, taking into account road conditions, traffic patterns, and blind spots. Our instructors will demonstrate how to check your mirrors and blind spots effectively, and how to signal your intentions clearly to other drivers.

Accelerating, emergency braking, and defensive driving.

Smart accelerating, braking, and steering are key to safe winter driving. In this module, you’ll learn how to accelerate smoothly and gradually on slippery surfaces, and how to use emergency braking effectively without losing control. You’ll also discover the importance of defensive driving techniques such as maintaining a safe following distance, anticipating potential hazards, and staying alert at all times.

Winter Road Safety Best Practices

Before setting out on a drive this winter, it’s essential to prepare your vehicle properly and take precautions to ensure your safety. In this module, you’ll learn about the best winter tires and snow chains, how to check your vehicle’s fluids and battery, and what to do in case of a breakdown or accident. Our instructors will also cover tips for staying alert and focused on the road during long drives in cold weather.
